What baud rate and crystal frequency are you using? Not all baud rates are possible for frequencies. Does it work at 9600 baud? Thats always a good starting point. Also make sure high-speed comms is turned off in the Advanced Options.

If this doesn't help then start Flash Magic, press F1 so "Debug" is shown in the title bar of the window, attempt to read the signature so the error appears, then close Flash Magic. Email me the generated c:flashmagic.fmd file along with the text of the error message, so I can see what is going on.
