#28121 - RE: 89c66x & keil & ERAM |
What is RTFM ?
I was using Zilog with assembler and 68HC11 with C compiler (IAR) in the past. I've finally choosen to continue my developments with 8051 for their large familly with recent chips and because I could have the uVision 1 opportunity. As Keil was a reference in compilers, I wouldn't spend time on free compilers for which I didn't know their capabilities and support. I've downloaded some free compilers like SDCC, but I though it was better to use Keil (I will say you why below). You're right by saying that using the PDF files from uVision 2 could be confusing, but it has allowed me to learn the invoke command lines or error messages, and I was hoping the 8052.com forum will help me when needed for the chaintool initialization. (for which I'm a beginner as you can see !) Moreover, my own applications are usually a base of knowledge for future profesionnal applications. So by choosing 8051, this is also to learn these microcontrollers and maybe use them for my job. I'm not a software developper now but a project manager and I've often to choose the tools for future developments. Sure I won't choose a free compiler as SDCC for commercial use. That's also why I spend time on commercial compilers to let me evaluate the products and supports. Be sure that the support is one of the most important criteria. And as I told, the old version should be good enough for my own applications. I've tried other compilers as ImageCraft or IAR systems. I've also downloaded the uVision 2 Demo version, but the code length limitation is low (4k). My application is larger. With 4K I can only implement my real time sequencer, some hexa LCD routines, communication bus routines, a PLL routine, .... I've started to code routines for a graphic LCD display for which I've to code the fonts,... it takes memory... One other own application will require to implement the AX25 protocol, used by ham radio. I'm affraid this will also take place... I've been a little long in this text, but it may explain you my choice to start with Keil u Vision 1 opportunity for own applications. Regards Stephane REY |
