Yes you have to put a resistor in series with the base otherwise you will damage the transistor.
you also need to put a resistor between base of transistor and ground in case microcontroller pin becomes open circuit then your motor would go mad.
You also need to put fast diode across the transistor to protect it from motor transiets, otherwise you would fry your transistor.
