If you're new to microcontrollers, check the ads on this website for 8052 evaluation boards and software. They aren't for PICs, but to a beginner one microcontroller pretty much looks like another. Of course here we're biased a bit towards the 8052...

PICs brag about their free tools; well 8052s also have free tools, including C compilers. You will also find a great source of information here: check out the tutorials and FAQ.

Once you get started, when you have specific questions you'll get answers here.
