Does your advisor want an original solution? Has he given you the specifications for the solution?

If he simply want a point to point comm link at higher speed than 100 Mbs, try purchasing a National Instruments solution (www.ni.com). I'm using a 1 Gbs, copper link (FO is also available) between a pc and an external chassis.

If you must build it, you've got some effort ahead of you in hardware and software.
