I can not see how you can add hardware and reduce your current consumption when operating at this level. Also how do you get reliable ir emmisions from the source with the available power? I think that the most cost effective solution would be either a separate battery for the sensor circuit, or just a larger set for the entire project. the power levels at 16uA approach the shelf life of a cell.
