You better research Ni-MH battery technology then. A simple voltage detect will not save the life of your cells. If you want a solution that does not involve the 8051 then you need to look at the various other sources that have been sugggested here. For example, both TI (old BenchMarq line) and Maxim make "smart battery pack" ICs for just this application.
