I have tried both the sites suggested by you two folks, but didn't find any info on the pinout of 16x2 panel.

I already have HITACHI HD44780 20x2 panel that runs fine. I just replaced it with 16x2 panel to the same code in the same board, but it didn't run. Total pin count is same though.

may be the chipset is from Hitachi, but the panels are made by third parties and each party can devise its own pinout at the interface with the micro, that's why its not running, MAY BE.

I will have to check for the data sheet of the panel.
