Capacitors almost require a magic decoder ring, but resistor color codes are easily remembered with the somewhat offensive phrase "Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly Get Some Now". The colors start with Black = 0, Brown = 1, etc. with Gold, Silver, and None for 5,10, & 20 % tolerance. First two bands are the two significant digits, third band is the number of 0's and the fourth band the tolerance. For example, Orange, Orange, Red, silver is a 3300 ohm, 10% resistor.
