I once put a pcb on a page scanner. The years-old opaque label fell off in process. The EPROM failed checksum tests upon post-scan power.

I was so disappointed by the prom failure (resulting in digging through old disks and re-blowing a new eprom) that i never looked at the "scanned" EPROM to see what level of erasure occurred.
