#33936 - RE: Modem |
An electronic house arrest monitoring product I designed years ago used a 300 baud modem for comms to the host computer. It was able to connect, exchange data, and hang up in 4-5 seconds. For quite some time, the phone companies would bill in no less than 6 second increments. When the host monitoring center started landing millions of calls per month, we gained enough clout to negotiate lower billing increments resulting in huge savings. This was an example where faster connect with small, slow data transfer is an appropriate tradeoff. |
