you can not do collision detection with a true 485. To do that you need to manhandle it as is done in J1708. This dramatically reduce the noise immunity and speed. Collision avoidance simply is as follows:

Master ask slave n: do you have anything
Slave n send data or respond "no"
master ask slave n+1 ...
