the max186 does indeed use a different control word ,using 8 bits instead of six..
so your control word 0x8E becomes the reverse.

1 x start //lsb
0 x set2
0 x set1
0 x set0
1 x uni/bip
1 x sgl/diff
1 x pd1
1 x pd0 //msb

but as we are sending it LSB first , it will need converting to..
