one more point to add on difference between linear and SMPS is that with linear power supplies you can never get rid of 50/60 Hz ripple while with SMPS you don't get low frequency ripple and hi frequency ripple can be filtered out more easily.
Did any body mention efficiency difference also. SMPS can have up to 90% efficiency while Linear power supplies have 25% efficiency.
