Have a look at the tutorials at this site, there's one which describes how to interface a common network card.

But, Does anyone know a method to implement a Ethernet enabled 8051 _without_ using an exsisting network card. Everything the NIC takes care of is implemented in the 8051 with the neccesary interface circuits to adapt to RS485/422. Anyone done that/heard of such a project?

A NIC is so big..
