Has anyone any experience that might be used to establish a benchmark for the '51?

Something like filter sample period vs. filter type (first order section, second order section), number of bits representing coefficients and number of bits used for the filter calculation - with consideration given to how the previous varies with '51 clock speed (since that'll be the next question.
