MAybe you should simply consider the use of the Dallas DS80C390. It has 2 CAN controllers built on board. That may be a combination, with some external FLASH that makes sense becasuse you may find more software samples to work with.. ... However there is no reason the the SJA1000 cannot be connected to the 89C420.
