can you point literatur/web-pag so I can learn something about the "Simplex method" (I have not come across it).

The array is a problem as the bigger it is the slower I am going to find my maximum. Naively for a start I would go for a 16 by 16 matrix remembering only the coordinates of my maximum going back there and start scanning a new array with smaller stepsize and hence higher resolution.
