It might be faster to post some of the I2C driver code. If you started with the Philips source, its probably just a typo problem; yours or theirs. Some register value is probably getting clobbered.

Since you are using the '552 with its built-in I2C port, I won't go through the normal list of I2C bugs. Usually everyone writing their own makes the same mistake before succeeding.
