Seems to me that trying to use the SBUF in your program or in the IDE interface is a BIG conflict of interest in using the UART for the debug monitor.

This is one of the huge benefits of using chips that support debugging via a JTAG port such as the Cygnal parts where the JTAG support pins do not impinge on any of the standard resources in the part.
