I was struggling with a bunch of 89c51RD2 chips that just refused to enter ISP the "hardware way ". And in the absence of a parallel port programmer, there was nothing much I could do.

I then tried the "No Touch" method proposed by Erik.

Simple idea. But very effective.

The rogue chips are now back in circulation and enter ISP whenever commanded to.
