Switching power supplies too complex? Use a Simple Switcher! Not an advert, just the result of personal experience. These devices (e.g. LM2678) allow you to build an upto 5A power supply which is extremely efficient (read : no hot parts!), using the TO220 device, a small choke, diode & 2 capacitors. I intend to use one for a battery-charger in a current design.
