RS-422 is a bi-directional bus (4 wires) and do thus need two MAX-485 chips. For excellent serial standards appnotes, go to the National Semiconductor website. I thought I had, but will now add tha kink to interseting sites in links <---. Give me a bit of time and it will be there.
