Hi Mike,
No, maintenance was always done "off line", programs were documented with REM statements, not preceded by line numbers, which BASIC52 always ignored. So, fully commented source was automatically compacted during the download.

Backup was from primary files held on the PC.

It is not impossible to write structured code in BASIC.
