I teach 2nd. year students at a technical college in Calcutta, India. My students would like to do a 8051/8052-microntroller based project e.g. a small data-acquisition system that monitors and controls
temperature and speed and relays this information on-demand using the SMS-protocol into our local GSM network. We have designed the 8051-based DACS (not coded as yet), but are stuck at the GSM/SMS unit and so at the interface to it.

Could someone suggest some methods as to how to go about it. Specific enquiries are on the following topics :

1. Circuits (with specific recommended chips) for Data Communication (no voice data) into a GSM network using the SMS network.

2. The RF transmit section for the above.

3. The necessary interface (protocol + handshaking, etc., which will be coded in 8051 assembly) for communication between the 8051 based DACS and the GSM/SMS ckt. above.
