I Have A UNIVERSAL Programmer which has only a connector to the LPT Port (Parallel port for erik) and no power input. This is what I told you, you get your power from the circuit that the atmel chip lives in. If it was in a box you need to connect the box to the power and turn it on to power the atmel chip and programmer. search for ISP in here for the atmel serial cable diagram. you need 6 pin header 2 of them for gnd and +5vdc, 1 for reset etc ...
