The problem with heartbeat detection is that you almost need DSP to validate the 'real' peaks. On "normal healthy persons" you can detect the highest peak and the second highest and set a discriminator to a middle value of the two. If you are developing this with a customer, ask to see some normal and some (very)abnormal cardiograms.
