How often does the hanging occur? That is, how repeatable is it?

Perhaps if you add a watchdog to your design... I'm thinking of having the WDT cause an interrupt, allowing you to save some state which might indicate where you're hanging.

If you know where you're hanging, that's a start in figuring out why you're hanging there.
