#43985 - RE: preemptive multitasking article Responding to: ???'s previous message |
That article preempted any interest I had on the subject! ;D
It seems to me that embedded systems using 8051 derivatives typically use a different task scheduler - the system designer. Program flow and timed function calls are arranged a priori to ensure adequate task service. I don't see how a software solution requiring A) an operating system, B) overhead for scheduler, C) overhead for software task switching, could provide anything more than coarse control. Is there a niche where the (bigger and slower) all-software solution is the better way to go? I just don't see how this idea is going to squeeze more functionality out of an 8-bit microcontroller. However, I do not yet understand the intended role of embedded RTOS's.. - Lee BTW, I am not asking for an explanation of RTOS's (I am going to search the archives on it since this topic sparked my interest), I am just thinking out loud more than anything else. |
