Lines of longitude are closer together near the poles. Your estimation assumes a linear relation between distance and degrees of longitude. My guess is that your estimation works well for small distances around a particular longitude but not for large distances. If you only need distances around a small area you may find that you can change the factors in the aproximation to make it work around your area. |
