I find surface mount packages easy to work with (sometimes easier than DIP/through-hole), I like the smaller circuit boards and I love ISP.
and for those that do not find surface mount packages easy to work with there is an abundance of PLCC sockets with .1" (2.54mm for the normal world) pin spacing.
