For use with an 8052 type processor I would recommend that you look at the voice chips from OKI Semiconductor. They have ADPCM build onto a chip and for some applications you can make a communications channel with bandwidths of 4K or 8K bits per second work. At this bandwidth the 8052 processor can handle the interface to/from am OKI chip.
