8253 was used in PC XT mother board for one timer for DRAM refresh one for time keeping and one free . in fact 8253 has many operating modes and big PC firmware used to initialize them. modern 8052 chip can perform similar things with no less power. diff is all modes of 8253 are hardwired , and here one have to do it by software.
