I use also the duty cycle to vary the volume and a capacitor (100nF) parallel to the speaker.

The duty cycle can easy be varied in the timer interrupt routine with different reload values for the high and the low time.
Since the speaker was off on high level, a short low level correspondent with a low volume.
And a low time equal to the high time correspondent with maximum volume.
