It's been ages since I last used Basic-52 and I'm not an expert. However, am pretty sure that it needs at least 1Kb of external SRAM to get going.

Another point to note is that it uses an auto-baud rate detect routine when it starts - you must type a space character on your console for it to calculate the rate correctly.
