you can interface 56k modem through serial communication, modem on startup stays on default baudrate. u can change it by commands (see v.90 modem commands)once connection is established. commands are string followed by return code(0dh i'm not sure). for example if you want to dial a number '1500' using tone dial you will send a command ATDT1500 (always starts with AT). modem will return a string 'ok' if succesful.
