SI units are more understandable for just about everyone, even in the USA. I don't want to speak for everyone in the USA, but I myself find SI much easier to use. Most of the time I convert standard units to SI when doing my calculations. In fact I have started doing my PCB libraries and layouts in SI. I am tired of converting datasheet measurements to standard. What a waste of time.
