I used the same chip a couple of years ago. I used the "Metalink" free assembly (has no linker) and have had no trouble with it.

All my previous comments on Atmel are now upgraded as Temic has decided to use the acquired Atmel company for their microcontroller products. That means improved channels for finding field application engineers, and distributors. I can live with that. :)

In my opinion, Temic makes the best 8051 for the dollar.
