Are you sure about that?

If my sources are correct, the 8255 was used for reading DIP-switch configuration, keyboard interfacing, speaker output and tape interface and more in the PC/XT - but not for the printer port.

All the old printer ports I have seen use either discrete logic chips or a dedicated chip.
