Depends on how many gain steps you need and what kind of quality of sound you are handling. Nowadays an EEpot is the bestway to go I think unless you are very cost conscoius.
Dallas and Xicor both do EEpots that are pretty good
Maxim do them better still.
Analog devices very good ones.
Burr Brown are extremely good and very expensive
