If you look at the 8052 instruction set on this very website you will see that there are two types of move instruction,mov and movx.mov addresses internal ram i.e your 256 bytes of scratchpad memory,and movx access your external memory in conjuction with the dptr.
For simple programs such as flashing leds and such like you don't need external memory
