You probably already have a tool to check out the parallel port...a printer. I would be surprised if the programmer used the port much differently than a printer. If you can print, the hardware is good.

Otherwise, a search on google should locate a parallel port utility program. Lots of shareware sites out there, lots of system utility programs.
