Given the recurring topic of I/O expansion, I noticed that Maxim have some pretty new devices for serial/parallel I/O, like the MAX 7300 , with 14 LED drives and a keypad interface, and the
MAX1608 which is an octal "expander"

Quite what delivery is on them is another matter.
