A search here will unearth all kinds of stuff on stepper driving. Oleg is right, in preference I'd use a stepper chip, that does the necessary sequncing for you, forwards and reverse. All you need to provide is a clock signal from the processor. Stepper chips often have integral current control too, which makes the steppers work better.
