Sending with interrupts is way easier if you equip the transmit routine with a circular queue. When you come to send the 5 codes you can put them all at once into the queue and let the mainline thread of your program get on with its normal job. The interrupt thread can then send and empty the queue byte by byte, using very little overhead, and greatly simplify the main code at the same time !!!
