You can make a pretty neat one with a three phase supply feeding coils in the manner of a linear motor (Eric Laithwaite - An Engineer in Wonderland)

Not that I have ever done any of these things, no not me, ever. Honest.

Also look for potato gun (supersonic potatoes !!!)
