Yes Uma,
that is one of the most wonderful sites to start off. Especially its "Encoder" section is excellant. By the way, any general purpose robot will have the following:
#1) Some Input Device (Camera, Proximity Sensors etc etc)
#2) Some Output Device (Wheels, mechanical limbs (like the sony's dog) etc).
#3) Some Specific Task to do. (Wake you up in the morning, make coffee for you and guard your house etc etc).

So, what exactly are you planning to do? Maybe someone has already done such a thing and would be of more help to you if you can say what you want?
