I could add that when using a serial EEPROM memory such as you are that it is not possible in general to guess that the writes are working correctly until you have success in reading back the data you wrote.

That is unless you have some exotic technique to crawl up inside the chip with a mini volt meter and o-scope and observe first hand the memory cell states.
