#62380 - RE: Ignition Coil and CDI
Responding to: ???'s previous message

As the other respondents suggested - use google for some research.

Simply put, a capacitor (~1uF) is charged with 70 -200v (depends on actual motorbike) and a SCR is used to dump the capacitors charge into the ignition coil.

CDI is normally only used on two stroke engines whereas TAI (transistor assisted ignition) is used on four strokes. TAI uses a transistor instead of the points.

Both these techniques use some electronics to control them and usually to perform the advance curve. The later models use microprocessors to compute the timing.

If,after doing some research you have specific questions about using microprocessors for the timing, we may be able to help.
