Yes, you did explain indeed and I have no reason to disagree...

I only wanted to clarify the modem-bit and the likes of it. That being said, I see no reason why one should ask about the comms of ATM machines (that is if you refer to the Automated Teller Machines, and not to Asynchronous Transfer Mode). It's just another (highly secured) computer-to-computer communication. If one wants examples, one would better look at at PC-communication.
